 |
| لَا أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ {١} |
1. I swear (or call to witness) this City (Mecca), |
| وَأَنْتَ حِلٌّ بِهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ {٢} |
2. And you (Muhammad) are a dweller of this City! |
| وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ {٣} |
3. And the (mystic ties) of Parent and Child! |
| لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ فِي كَبَدٍ {٤} |
4. We have surely created man in suffering (struggle, trouble, sorrow). |
| أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَنْ يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ {٥} |
5. Does he think that none has power over him? |
| يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُبَدًا {٦} |
6. He says, "I have squandered wealth in plenty;" |
| أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَمْ يَرَهُ أَحَدٌ {٧} |
7. Does he think that no one sees him? |
| أَلَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَهُ عَيْنَيْنِ {٨} |
8. Have We not made for him two eyes |
| وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ {٩} |
9. And a tongue, and two lips? |
| وَهَدَيْنَاهُ النَّجْدَيْنِ {١٠} |
10. And guided him in the two highways? |
| فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ {١١} |
11. But he has not attempted the ascent! |
| وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ {١٢} |
12. And what will explain to you the ascent? |
| فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ {١٣} |
13. It is freeing captives (or prisoners, slaves, the restricted or bound), |
| أَوْ إِطْعَامٌ فِي يَوْمٍ ذِي مَسْغَبَةٍ {١٤} |
14. Or feeding on the day of privation, |
| يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ {١٥} |
15. An orphan who is a kin, |
| أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ {١٦} |
16. Or a destitute lying in the dust (of misery); |
| ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ {١٧} |
17. And again (it is) to be of those who believe and encourage each other to patience, and encourage each other to mercy, |
| أُولَٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ {١٨} |
18. These are the fellows of the right! |
| وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ {١٩} |
19. But those who disbelieve in our signs, they are the fellows of the left, |
| عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُؤْصَدَةٌ {٢٠} |
20. For them is the enclosing Fire! |
