 |
| ن ۚ وَالْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَ {١} |
1. Nuun* - by oath of the pen and by oath of what is written by it. (Alphabet of the Arabic language; Allah and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) |
| مَا أَنْتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُونٍ {٢} |
2. You are not insane, by the munificence of your Lord. |
| وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجْرًا غَيْرَ مَمْنُونٍ {٣} |
3. And indeed for you is an unlimited reward. |
| وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ {٤} |
4. And indeed you possess an exemplary character. |
| فَسَتُبْصِرُ وَيُبْصِرُونَ {٥} |
5. So very soon, you will see and they too will realise - |
| بِأَيْيِكُمُ الْمَفْتُونُ {٦} |
6. - That who among you was insane. |
| إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ ضَلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ {٧} |
7. Indeed your Lord well knows those who have strayed from His path, and He well knows those who are upon guidance. |
| فَلَا تُطِعِ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ {٨} |
8. Therefore do not listen to the deniers. |
| وَدُّوا لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ {٩} |
9. They wish that in some way you may yield, so they too might soften their stand. |
| وَلَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍ مَهِينٍ {١٠} |
10. Nor ever listen to any excessive oath maker, ignoble person. |
| هَمَّازٍ مَشَّاءٍ بِنَمِيمٍ {١١} |
11. The excessively insulting one, spreader of spite. |
| مَنَّاعٍ لِلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ {١٢} |
12. One who excessively forbids the good, transgressor, sinner. |
| عُتُلٍّ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ {١٣} |
13. Foul mouthed, and in addition to all this, of improper lineage. |
| أَنْ كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ {١٤} |
14. Because he* has some wealth and sons. ( * Walid bin Mugaira, who cursed the Holy Prophet.) |
| إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ آيَاتُنَا قَالَ أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ {١٥} |
15. When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “These are stories of earlier people.” |
| سَنَسِمُهُ عَلَى الْخُرْطُومِ {١٦} |
16. We will soon singe his pig-nose. |
| إِنَّا بَلَوْنَاهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَا أَصْحَابَ الْجَنَّةِ إِذْ أَقْسَمُوا لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَ {١٧} |
17. We have indeed tested them the way We had tested the owners of the garden when they swore that they would reap its harvest the next morning. |
| وَلَا يَسْتَثْنُونَ {١٨} |
18. And they did not say, “If Allah wills”. |
| فَطَافَ عَلَيْهَا طَائِفٌ مِنْ رَبِّكَ وَهُمْ نَائِمُونَ {١٩} |
19. So an envoy from your Lord completed his round upon the garden, whilst they were sleeping. |
| فَأَصْبَحَتْ كَالصَّرِيمِ {٢٠} |
20. So in the morning it became as if harvested. |
| فَتَنَادَوْا مُصْبِحِينَ {٢١} |
21. They then called out to each other at daybreak. |
| أَنِ اغْدُوا عَلَىٰ حَرْثِكُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَارِمِينَ {٢٢} |
22. That, “Go to your fields at early morn, if you want to harvest.” |
| فَانْطَلَقُوا وَهُمْ يَتَخَافَتُونَ {٢٣} |
23. So they went off, while whispering to one another. |
| أَنْ لَا يَدْخُلَنَّهَا الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِسْكِينٌ {٢٤} |
24. “Make sure that no needy person enters your garden this day.” |
| وَغَدَوْا عَلَىٰ حَرْدٍ قَادِرِينَ {٢٥} |
25. And they left at early morn, assuming they were in control of their purpose. |
| فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهَا قَالُوا إِنَّا لَضَالُّونَ {٢٦} |
26. Then when they saw it, they said, “We have indeed strayed.” |
| بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ {٢٧} |
27. “In fact, we are unfortunate.” |
| قَالَ أَوْسَطُهُمْ أَلَمْ أَقُلْ لَكُمْ لَوْلَا تُسَبِّحُونَ {٢٨} |
28. The best among them said, “Did I not tell you, ‘Why do you not proclaim His purity?’ ” |
| قَالُوا سُبْحَانَ رَبِّنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَالِمِينَ {٢٩} |
29. They said, “Purity is to our Lord – we have indeed been unjust.” |
| فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَلَاوَمُونَ {٣٠} |
30. So they came towards each other, blaming. |
| قَالُوا يَا وَيْلَنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا طَاغِينَ {٣١} |
31. They said, “Woe to us - we were indeed rebellious.” |
| عَسَىٰ رَبُّنَا أَنْ يُبْدِلَنَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا إِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا رَاغِبُونَ {٣٢} |
32. “Hopefully, our Lord will give us a better replacement than this - we now incline towards our Lord.” |
| كَذَٰلِكَ الْعَذَابُ ۖ وَلَعَذَابُ الْآخِرَةِ أَكْبَرُ ۚ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ {٣٣} |
33. Such is the punishment; and indeed the punishment of the Hereafter is the greatest, if only they knew! |
| إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ {٣٤} |
34. Indeed for the pious, with their Lord, are Gardens of Serenity. |
| أَفَنَجْعَلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ كَالْمُجْرِمِينَ {٣٥} |
35. Shall We equate the Muslims to the guilty? |
| مَا لَكُمْ كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُونَ {٣٦} |
36. What is the matter with you? What sort of a judgement you impose! |
| أَمْ لَكُمْ كِتَابٌ فِيهِ تَدْرُسُونَ {٣٧} |
37. Is there a Book for you, from which you read? |
| إِنَّ لَكُمْ فِيهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُونَ {٣٨} |
38. - That for you in it is whatever you like? |
| أَمْ لَكُمْ أَيْمَانٌ عَلَيْنَا بَالِغَةٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ ۙ إِنَّ لَكُمْ لَمَا تَحْكُمُونَ {٣٩} |
39. Or is it that you have a covenant from Us, right up to the Day of Judgement, that you will get all what you claim? |
| سَلْهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ بِذَٰلِكَ زَعِيمٌ {٤٠} |
40. Ask them, who among them is a guarantor for it? |
| أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَاءُ فَلْيَأْتُوا بِشُرَكَائِهِمْ إِنْ كَانُوا صَادِقِينَ {٤١} |
41. Or is it that they have partners in worship? So they should bring their appointed partners, if they are truthful. |
| يَوْمَ يُكْشَفُ عَنْ سَاقٍ وَيُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى السُّجُودِ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ {٤٢} |
42. On the day when the Shin will be exposed and they will be called to prostrate themselves, they will be unable. |
| خَاشِعَةً أَبْصَارُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ۖ وَقَدْ كَانُوا يُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى السُّجُودِ وَهُمْ سَالِمُونَ {٤٣} |
43. With lowered eyes, disgrace overcoming them; and indeed they used to be called to prostrate themselves whilst they were healthy. |
| فَذَرْنِي وَمَنْ يُكَذِّبُ بِهَٰذَا الْحَدِيثِ ۖ سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُمْ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ {٤٤} |
44. Therefore leave the one who denies this matter, to Me; We shall soon steadily take them away, from a place they do not know. |
| وَأُمْلِي لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ كَيْدِي مَتِينٌ {٤٥} |
45. And I will give them respite; indeed My plan is very solid. |
| أَمْ تَسْأَلُهُمْ أَجْرًا فَهُمْ مِنْ مَغْرَمٍ مُثْقَلُونَ {٤٦} |
46. Or is it that you (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) ask any fee from them, so they are burdened with the penalty? |
| أَمْ عِنْدَهُمُ الْغَيْبُ فَهُمْ يَكْتُبُونَ {٤٧} |
47. Or that they possess the hidden, so they are writing it? |
| فَاصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُنْ كَصَاحِبِ الْحُوتِ إِذْ نَادَىٰ وَهُوَ مَكْظُومٌ {٤٨} |
48. Therefore wait for your Lord’s command, and do not be like the one of the fish; who cried out when he was distraught. (Prophet Yunus - peace be upon him.) |
| لَوْلَا أَنْ تَدَارَكَهُ نِعْمَةٌ مِنْ رَبِّهِ لَنُبِذَ بِالْعَرَاءِ وَهُوَ مَذْمُومٌ {٤٩} |
49. Were it not for his Lord’s favour that reached him, he would have surely been cast onto the desolate land, reproached. |
| فَاجْتَبَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَجَعَلَهُ مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ {٥٠} |
50. His Lord therefore chose him and made him among those deserving His proximity. |
| وَإِنْ يَكَادُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا الذِّكْرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُ لَمَجْنُونٌ {٥١} |
51. And indeed the disbelievers seem as if they would topple you with their evil gaze when they hear the Qur’an, and they say, “He is indeed insane.” |
| وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِلْعَالَمِينَ {٥٢} |
52. Whereas it is not but an advice to the entire creation! |
